I will say like people say: if she would have done that, we wouldn't have the same movie. But yeah if you think about it, going through all this trouble while she could have simply driven the whole way was kinda pointless. The situation added something to the movie, like a mom ready for anything just to see her child. It was cute. I don't think she was really in the state of mind to really think it thoughtfully.
True, maybe she wasn't thinking things through but as soon as I set foot in the United States I would have immediately gotten a rental car and driven straight through stopping only for gas. The way things played out she would have gotten back to Chicago quicker if she had done that. By that point Kevin had already been by himself for at least a day and a half, 14 more hours isn't going to make much of a difference.
Just did the calculations when she left Paris it was on December 23 and it was dark outside, I will give it the benefit of the doubt and assume it was really late like 11PM, from Paris to Dallas it is an 11 hour flight but Paris is 7 hours ahead of Dallas so when she lands it would have been 3AM. Therefore if she gets a rental car she would have been back at 5PM and she would have been back shortly after Kevin discovered that Harry and Marv were going to rob the house at 9PM.
But... But.... We wouldn't the awesome traps!! :o So if she would have things the right way, we wouldn't have one of the defining point of the Home Alone movies. :P
Is it logical? Also wouldn’t the movie have told us considering they even explained earlier why there was a doggie door yet no dog. Just because something is possible doesn’t make it logical
Well I do think it could be a logical reason. I know many people who can't drive or won't drive when nervous or in bad weather conditions... And I really don't think this movie is the best example of a logical script as the writer didn't bother explaining many details. The emphasis was simply in making it difficult for her to get home, also including the John Candy character, as well as for the family to get in touch with Kevin (the telephone line not working is another issue full of debates) is never really explained. The lines were down, but he ordered pizza. From a pay phone? Whatever! And sometimes, when people are nervous and worried like kate was, they don't think in a logical way. There are many things not well explained. Anyway I love this movie!
You don't have any justification to think that she can't drive and considering how much time the movie spends explaining how things fell into place to result in Kevin being left home alone it is mindless to think that Kate wouldn't be able to drive without any kind of revelation. She knew how to drive, it's beyond within reason to conclude she did, right now you are just making things up.
