Kevin was a little mouthy brat

I can't imagine saying some of the *beep* he did at the start of the film to my old man and mum when growing up. "Why don't you get off the phone and make me?" would have gotten me a smack.

How did he get away with all his nonsense.

reply

Even though Frank is a jerk I usually give him a bit of a pass when it comes to Kevin because Kevin's rudeness to his parents right from the get go explains the families frustration with him

We have to show the world that not all of us are like him: Henning von Tresckow.

reply

Yep, he seemed like a classic spoilt rich kid. I'm sure he mouthed off to frank about not letting him watch the film before annoying his mum. He seemed genuinely shocked when Frank shouted at him, so it must have been the first time.

reply

I would've gotten at least a smack if I'd talked to my mom like Kevin did. I can also tell you that had any of my uncles called me a little jerk my mom their would've taken a bat to their head. No body talks to her bratty kid like that!

He's taking the knife out of the Cheese!
Do you think he wants some cheese?

reply

I don't know how he got away with it, but I believe his behavior stemmed from the way his siblings treated him. They all treated him like dirt, especially Buzz.

reply

I agree. He's a product of prick siblings.

reply

Oh give me a break!!! My brother used to take the mick out of me all the time. I did the same to my sisters but none of us ever spoke to our mother like that!

reply

Take a look at how Buzz treated Kevin. He ate all of Kevin's pizza, knowing full well that Kevin only liked cheese pizza. As if that wasn't bad enough, he provokes Kevin further by pretending to throw up on him, which makes Kevin shove him, leading to KEVIN getting in trouble. Buzz was even worse in the sequel when he humiliated Kevin at a school recital, and once again, Buzz got away scot free while Kevin got in trouble again.

Kevin's bratty behavior can be blamed on his parents as well as his siblings. His parents are downright mean to him and his Uncle Frank is a pathetic excuse of a human being.

Sorry I'm not sold! So he ate all his pizza, big deal!!! I'm not saying Buzz wasn't a dick but there's no excuse for physicality. As well as that if I spoke to my mother the way Kevin did right from the start I would have been grounded for a year!

It was a big deal to Kevin because he only liked plain pizza. Knowing this, Buzz ate all the plain pizza out of spite towards Kevin. If one of your older siblings did this to you, you'd be pretty pissed off too.

Yes, Kevin shouldn't have used physical force. However, keep in mind that Kevin was 8 and Buzz basically added insult to injury by acting like he was going to vomit on Kevin. That is what made Kevin shove Buzz. Kevin was already angry that all the cheese pizza was gone, because of Buzz. The fake vomiting was the last straw for Kevin.

Also, this probably wasn't the first time Buzz did something to upset Kevin. Being the youngest of his siblings, Kevin was basically a prime target for harassment at their hands.

As to the way Kevin spoke to his mother, he shouldn't have spoken to her like that. However, when kids misbehave or talk back, there's usually a reason. If you watch the movie again, you'll notice that Kevin is either ignored, picked on, or punished for something he didn't do.

Nonsense! If you're a parent you're an unfit one and your kids will be bullies so I hope you're proud!!! Nobody made Kevin say 'Hang up the phone and make me why don't ya'! Nobody forced him to play with the glue gun when he knew he shouldn't and nobody forced him to make ornaments out of his dads new fish hooks and that's all in like the first five minutes.

reply

First of all, I'm not a parent. Second, who do you think you are harassing me like that? If you don't agree with what I said earlier, that's fine, but it does not give you the right to be a troll.

Wow, those are all major transgressions! Does it really strike you as odd behaviour for an 8 year-old? You sound like an older, old-school parent, but for 30 or 40 something parents, please excuse us if we don't impose martial law on our kids.

reply

It's likely Buzz has treated Kevin this way his whole life and the pizza just pushed him over the edge. Now in the second movie Buzz really asked for it.

reply

I agree that with the incident of the pizza it was Buzz who provoked him. I agree that this time it wasn't his fault. But Kevin wasn't so innocent either, so they took it for granted that it was his fault. It happened like the boy who cried wolf. Let me tell you why Kevin wasn't so innocent either.
1. He refused to even try to pack his own suitcase. If he could set all the traps for the bad guys, couldn't he also pack his own suitcase?
2. He blamed the pizza delivery boy for not bringing more cheesepizza. It wasn't the delivery boy's fault. He brought what he was told to bring. Kevin should have blamed whoever ordered the pizza.
3. He climed up the shelves when he could have gotten a chair.
Now you understand why I say that he wasn't so innocent? Also in the second movie he could have waited to get on the plane to get the batteries. You see what I am saying?

reply

To add to that: "I am upstairs stupid!"... TO HIS MOM! I would've taken him over my knee right then!

reply

Well that's sort of the whole point of the film. The main character has to undergo a personal journey and Kevin's was that he was an irresponsible and helpless brat who learned to fend for himself and get a lesson in how to appreciate people or in this case his family.

It's film school 101. Just becasue he is a child doesn't mean he's exempt from it.

reply

So Kevin was a brat but Buzz wasn't? What about uncle Frank?

He was a grown man who about 50, he should know better than to call an 8 year old a jerk. Even if he was a smart mouth.

And If you notice, Kevin only acts up and gets in trouble when Buzz provokes him!

I agree that Buzz was bullying him. I am not siding with Buzz. Because two wrongs don't make a right. I am just saying that Kevin wasn't so innocent either for the reasons I stated.

reply

I didn't think much of it as a kid, but as an adult, his attitude is REALLY off-putting.

reply

If anyone who should be called out is Buzz!

Along with uncle Frank who behaves like a man child despite being what?? 40?? 50?? Years old.

reply

I would never have been anywhere near that rude to my parents either--and I was no perfect little angel. But in his defense, you can tell that the parents hadn't taken the time to teach any of their children appropriate behavior, and they did unfairly single out Kevin for punishment. It doesn't justify Kevin's behavior, but it wouldn't have been fair to punish him severely for disrespect when nobody had taught him--or his siblings--decent manners.

reply

It seemed like that was the norm for Kevin and his family, though. His mom didn't seem shocked that he said those things, which means it probably wasn't the first time Kevin acted like that. I guess some parents would get all bent out of shape and others would just let it roll off their back and treat him bad as well.

reply

He was an annoying kid throughout the movie.

reply

Yeah but his siblings were worse.
