i think this is an important film, because it shows what someone will do to preserve their life(and possibly beliefes). it asks what would you ,yes you- do to keep yourself alive in a mad situation like that. in that the person is not a hero is similar to roman polanski's last film -the pianist. most people do go along with the tide, however it is. and they try to to fit in and think it cant get worse..ask yourself what would you do in the same situation. this was a young boy caught up in things beyond his control who made the best that opportunity allowed. also being a true story although admitedly changed for the cinema i think its scary and something to make people think about so called racial identy.
well thats my rant over

I was very moved by the story of " Aimee & Jaguar"---a true and tragic love between a Jewish woman and a German wife of a Wermacht soldier set during the WWII in Berlin. I cried buckets. I also saw a documentary about Lilly Wust, 96 at the time of the interview, who said she never loved anyone else after Felice.

I've watched this film many times and each time it is horrifying and amazing to think of the things that Solly must have went through. Although Agnieszka Holland changed a lot of things in the film that differs from the book, mainly for dramatic purposes, it still shows the madness of Solly's situation. One of the most strongest scenes in the film is where Solly or "Jupp" is being examined by his race instructor. He is being declared an authentic Aryan in a school where National Socialism is culitvated and where being able to identify Jews is a science. It proves how false their doctrine was. Here a Jew stands before them but they have no idea. This film also shows the extreme beliefs that Solly was exposed to during his childhood. A German Jewish family, orphan in a Soviet Orphanage, and a HitlerJugend. I recommend the book by Solomon Perel. It is just as fascinating as the movie.

yeah of course, best movie ever, only topped by "Plan 9 from Outer Space" und "Battlefield Earth". And nearly all other movies. Horrible acting, laughable dialogue, massive mistakes concerning historic accuracy, just a plain dumb movie. Even the german massmedias, which normally applaude any movie about this topic couldn't avoid the fact that its simply awful. And it nearly put an end to Marco Hofschneiders career.

You are entitled to your opinion but your form is very questionable. More so the fact this has a 7.7 rating on IMDB indicates that OP is more accurate than that opinion.

dont know why i was rather disappointed with the ending.
it all came to me only later, that he went and joined his brother and such...
but it wasn't as concluding as i hoped it would be.
in a sense i guess i loved it so much i didnt want the movie to end.

Best compared to what other movies. No offense but I think you should see more movies.

It seems every movie I have read about on this site is declared "Best Movie Ever" by someone who loved it and "Worst Movie Ever" by someone who didn't like it. Nothing is all good or bad, there are good points and bad to everything and everybody, even if you feel strongly about them. The poorest-made film may have lovely scenery, and a popular film may have a poor actor or continuity errors. Just because you liked it or not doesn't automatically make it the worst or best ever, and declaring it as such only goes to show how lazy and simple-minded you are. Why not learn something, think about various aspects of the film and wider aspects of filmmaking, and actually discuss its good points and bad? For example, I find many Holocaust films to be overdramatized and even bordering on preachy, but this one was better written than most and also benefitted from the lack of a tragic score playing in the background. While Hofschneider's acting wasn't always up to par, the scenes in which he feared for his life the most (for example, while having his head and face measured in the classroom) carried themselves by virtue of excellent timing and superb acting by the men who portrayed Nazi officers and teachers, who were portrayed not as insane monsters but as stern men of power caught up in a zealous and dangerous mindset.

The tone of this film really reminded me of "The Tin Drum," but not as peculiar and severe. You are right about the lack of a super dramatic score, the songs to me evoked emotions other than sadness... too many WWII/Holocaust films rely on cliched "sad" music to evoke a reaction in the viewer.

And the "worst/best movie ever" thing does become tiresome, though the "worst movie ever" people are particularly obnoxious, because they just want to piss people off.

I think I somewhat agree, although Schindler's List seems to be the most powerful I've ever seen. But being an American we're not used to seeing real powerful movies of this caliber. So called movie experts rant on and on about Citizen Kane and Casablanca. Neither of them moved me at all, they actually were so boring I had to watch them in segments. Even talking about them is making me yawn.

reply

Yes, a VERY powerful movie. Very moving.

I was impressed by this film to say the least. I've seen more WWII films then I should be able to remember, but this was definitely the one with the most unique plot due to the circumstances of the main character. Though my personal favorite remains to be Der Untergang (A.K.A. Downfall), the film that depicts the last days of the war as played out in Hitler's bunker.

A little Polish propaganda in it, by a Polish director. Otherwise, it's pretty good.
