I am almost positive it was Antonin Artaud's "The Passion of Joan of Arc" from 1928.
shareI am watching Henry and June as I write this and the movie he is watching is not a real movie. After Henry leaves the theater Anais asks him if the actress remindeds him of someone he knew and he tells her it is his wife June(Uma Thurman).
The clip from The Passion of Joan of Arc comes later in the movie.

I wish it were a real movie. It's beautiful.

I am just sitting here watching it again, and the man in the film looks like a very young Henry Daniell.
