Absolutely dire

I gave up on this film in the first twenty minutes. We're told the story was set in 1900, and we then see a public hanging. Public execution in England was abolished in 1868, so this was stretching credibility a bit far. (However for an American TV movie they did show a clergyman correctly reading from the Book of Common Prayer, which is surprising.)

Then we see Sherlock Holmes played by an overweight Edward Woodward in a bad wig and some grey shading on his face to make him look thinner. I kept expecting Watson to say 'Magnum' instead of 'Holmes' and when Warren Clarke appeared with a fur coat, eye patch and false moustache I gave up. Schlock for the American TV market.

Perhaps more than anything else, I was dismayed to hear Watson refer to Holmes as "Sherlock" on several occasions throughout the movie.

I recorded the original CBS broadcast in '90 and just watched it as I transferred it to DVD. Admittedly, it's not a great show. But I'll still take it over Guy Ritchie's inflated crap.
