Friedkin's Opinion

At a recent discussion I attended in NY, Friedkin was asked why he omitted "The Guardian" from his new memoir; he said: "why would people want to read about an absolute complete disaster...that film has been brought to Guantanamo to be forgotten"

reply

Damn that's harsh. That movie is a classic for me. I really wanted to know what M. Friedkin think of that movie.

reply

Just heard his audio commentary for this movie and it's called it one of his best films with The Exorcist and French Connection.

reply

It's a classic for me as well.

reply

This is so weird when you know his 1999 audio commentary where he claims that it is his most personal movie, and that there is nothing he would change about it.

reply

I could see how reading about a movie that just kind of went off the rails would be as interesting as his successes. Some talented people worked on it.

reply

Friedkin was offered a lot of cash to do the film so he made the film for monetary reasons and not artistic reasons.
It was a troubled shot and the rewrites made it even more demanding.
He hated the final product but was contractually obliged to promote it and claim he liked it.
