dont understand the ending

i watched this movie in french class, in french with english subtitles, and my entire class thought it was great. it was funny, cute, unpredictable. and then along came the end. wierd desperate kissing scene. confusion outside taxi... goodbye and then credits. i just sat there so confused. can someone explain to me what exactly happened. i think it might have been the fact that it was in french that confused me.... :o
