This movie was basically Scorsese's way to say how much gangsters are despicable. He likes to take risks and always did, so his characters are often stereotypical and over the top. The point of Goodfellas was to show characters who we could only hate, and to do so, they are shown doing some totally abysmal shit. Tummy was pretty much the only one who had no redeemable qualities and had had the karma hitting him. By the end, they all lose and it becomes clear that all the success they seemed to have was simply irony: they choosed the wrong path and it had not been too long before they started to see things collapse around them.
