STALE

What a mess this film is; big Hollywood names, all turning in rancid performances, a tired script, poorly recreated and incorrect timelines, poor, rushed direction and editing, tv movie quality film score, Coppola's daughter stinking up every scene she appeared in, and worst of all, Al Pacino making no effort to bring back the character he played in the first two films, but rather giving us some hysterical clown performance.. What IS this piece of crap, and how on Earth does it have almost 8 stars here?? "The Godfather" & "Godfather Part II" are legendary, iconic films. How is this thing just such a complete failure? It's like everyone involved lost their minds...and their talents. I kept looking for a hint of Coppola's style while watching this thing, and couldn't find a hint of it anywhere..it seems everything he made after "The Cotton Club" was artless trash, excluding maybe "Bram Stoker's Dracula.."

Rant much?

Maybe you should listen the Coppola's commentary. Some things are explained.

For instance. Winona Ryder was cast as Mary. Her start was delayed and so they filmed what they could without her. Then it fell through entirely. Coppola had to fill the role immediately and wanted a fresh face not a seasoned actress, so he cast Sofia who was an art student at the time. Unfortunately for some of the scenes she was not properly prepped and her lines were more Valley than they should have been. Ironically life imitates art for both Michael and Francis.

The Michael of the 3rd movie was not supposed to be like the Michael of the first two. He had relinquished his power. He is suffering from diabetes. His conscience, particularly regarding Fredo, causes him a great deal of pain. Coppola did not want Pacino to play the character the same way he had been. Coppola wanted to devastate and destroy Michael and show that Michael was a monster not heroic.

He's completely right, this movie is a turgid, convoluted disappointment, that banks on the nostalgia of the first two and in turns it into a daytime soap opera.
