Actress Rebecca Schaeffer was set to audition for the role of Mary, but she was murdered by a stalker the day she was supposed to meet with Francis Ford Coppola.

Worse than facial expression was her inability to articulate syllables onscreen. She has this slurred valley-thing going - if her *character* was that dim a bulb, we could maybe roll with it....but she's decidedly not supposed to be a dimwit, but a bright, rich, educated successor to the Corleone estate. It's kind of like asking us to believe Denise Richards as a nuclear physicist in that James Bond movie...

There is no doubt Sofia's acting was not very good in this movie in terms of her ability to bring the character of Mary to life independently. However, Sofia's chemistry with her co-stars worked for me. At a minimum I bought her as Micheal's last shred of innocence and hope because the actors related to each other in an authentic way. I also thought her and Andy had good chemistry so the part about the forbidden romance was believable. It also helped that mostly the character of Mary was a plot point and was not a major focus of the movie. So the impact of her lack of acting skills was partially muted.

I know tastes may differ but goddamn i couldn't stand her face up close in GF3, she pretty much ruined it for me among other things, if it wasn't for Andy Garcia i wouldn't even bother watching it till the end. This was pretty much like Terminator 3 in comparison to first and second part.
