Hunting/Trapping

Was anyone else (mildly) disturbed by the way the movie glorifies hunting and particularly trapping? I know this all coming from the text, and it's probably accurate to the time period, but I guess I was bothered by all the smiling, laughing and upbeat music during the hunting scenes. Also, did Uncle Jules remind anyone else of Teddy Roosevelt (physically and also in his love for hunting)?

reply

Not in the slitest.

I have to agree with the points that you raised, I am strongly opposed to hunting for sport.

Yeah he did remind me of Teddy Roosevelt. And I am also not a big fan of hunting.

Let's make it clear that they were not trophy hunting. They ATE the game that they harvested. If you're vegan then I can see where you may have grounds for criticism. But if you eat meat from the grocery store then you have no grounds for criticism. It's more cruel to lead animals to the slaughter house than to hunt them in wilderness where they at least have a good chance to escape.

Great hunting scenes.

Absolutely true to the culture of the time and the place.

The movie is all about that hunt. It is titled after the price he catches. Of course hunting has to appear somehow worthy of interest.

If you get out of urban areas you will find that even today, hunting is glorified in most places. Many adults in North America spend half their annual vacation time and lots of money on their hunting trip and everyone is socially expected to talk positively of it and inquire about their catch.

Hunting is not meant to be economically or nutritiously efficient but it is an important ritual, probably the last one that is almnost exclusive for males. And hunting animals is way more humane than caging them if factory farms, plus it is highly regulated and the balance of the ecosystem depends on it.

I am no hunter myself but I have a lot of respect for good hunters, hunting is very demanding physically and you come back home empty-ended most times. The good hunters respect the environment and their prey;, those idiots hicks you imagine shooting machine guns from their jeep do not have what it takes to catch something good. Plus, that meat is bio and delicious.

Excuse my rant OP, I was also answering to some other posts in this thread.
