Marcel and 'Mother'

anyone notice the very STRANGE affection that marcel held for his mom? the loving looks, the kissing of the hand and insisting that she change her shoes? (in the sense that he cares too much?) perhaps it's different in french culture, but it seemed odd to me.... i'd be frightened if i were augustine...

OMG! A child who loves his mother! that's so disturbing! Augustine should have slapped his kid in the face really hard. I mean, a child is supposed to hate his mother, isn't he?

In the back of Pagnol's book "my mothers castle" he wrote this and I am going to tranlate it because I found this beautifull.

"This story is true but hapened a long time agoe, when your grandparents were still children..in thoses days wagons were rolling down the streets and when a car was coming we could ear it from far away so the horses were scared and the peoples were runing for cover..its to tell you how fast the world change
but there is something that will never change : It's the love of children for their mothers and I wrote this book to teach little girls how much their sons will love them someday"

Now Marcel had a great mother and she deserved the love he had for her but Marcel loved his mum the same way he was proud of his father in "my father's glory".

I don't think that's true. Pride in one's father will never be the same as love for one's mother. You can't compare the intensity since they can't be measured on the same scale. I did notice some hints of Oedipus complex however, but I dismissed it mostly as child's play.

If a boy's first female love isn't his mother, then something is wrong.

Remember, this is an autobiographical story. Pagnol's mother died when he was very young. Of course he's going to have strong memories of his feelings for her when she was alive.

I wonder if it may be a case of a man looking back at the relationship with his mother who died way too young with more affection and tenderness than he truly showed at the time.
