just two topics for this film!!!!

I am surprised that there isn't more threads for this film considering many people herald it as one of the best french films of all-time. After just watching it I have to say I am slightly disappointed. I guess its cause of all the hype but I thought it was a little too 'twee' and waltons-esque. It started strongly and the fathers similies and the way he bought up the kids was great. But later it just got camper and camper. I don't think this was helped by the fact that marcel looked like he was going to grow up to become france's number one female tennis player in 2005. It's just at times I felt like the von trapp family were going to leap out and start singing 'the hills are alive'. A great film non the less. It made me remember how much I hated the end of the school holidays as a child and I look forward to watching the sequel very soon.

Well get ready for the end because its not really what you can call a happy ending, its quite effective noneless but soooooo sad I could not stop crying the first time.

I have to say that at the beginning I found the dad Joseph's performance really camp and over the top, but by the end of the film I couldn't help thinking what a nice enthuiastic father he was, and had completely dismissed my earlier thoughts.

I agree allso I taught he was much too old at first, come on he did not look 25 at the begining of the first film but then his acting in the second film made me forget that allso.

Well, I had the opposite impression. The long introduction was unnecessary, in my opinion. The movie could have easily started with the family moving to the summer cottage, because the main thing in this movie is the summer holiday. But that was preceded by half an hour introduction about the boy being born and growing up. It was all nicely shot, but they could have used that time to show more of the amusing local village life.
