Meaning behind the waking up next to the angel statue, then it falls and breaks?

This sequence of shots in Ghost is probably my favorite. Sam is realizing he has died, then wakes up next to that angel figurine. Then there's a shot of this same statue falling from the apartment and breaking into pieces on the ground. Beautiful filmed. But I have no idea what it means or symbolizes.

Any ideas?

Sounds like it's either symbolic of him coming to the realization that there's no afterlife (at least at that moment in the film) or it could be that the angel represents himself, and this is just a metaphorical way of him dealing with the fact he's no longer alive.
