Disappointing

I picked a DVD of this movie up in a $2 bin and thought it would be an interesting film - a modern take on Frankenstein with two great actors (John Hurt and the late Raul Julia) in leading roles.

In fact, I found the movie to be a terrible disappointment. I felt as though I was watching a bad mix of Frankenstein, Back to the Future (including a futuristic sportscar), and perhaps a Doctor Who episode that didn't make the series cut. The actors mostly phoned in their performances as well, especially Julia, who seemed unresponsive emotionally to everything that was happening around him.

I also thought that adding the Shelleys and Lord Byron to the mix was a silly bit of whimsy. It takes self-referencing and breaking the fourth wall to a new level of absurdity.
