Is the dance still forbidden?
If so, should we even be discussing it on this board?
shareJosef K tried.
sharethe whole "forbidden dance" thing came from Hollywood. I know 2 people who are Brazilian who both grew up in Porto Seguro where Lambada originated. They have said, along with many other dancers that it was never called the Forbidden Dance.
shareIt's really Hollywood hype, like how they're constantly trying to brand films no one's heard of as controversial or "the movie they don't want you to see" (whoever "they" are).
shareI live in Brazil since I was born and... Lambada never was what everybody was dancing. Maybe in some states. Maybe...
So, it is not forbidden either.
So most Brazilians never wanted to dance the lambada in the first place, and it was never forbidden for those who did?
shareBasically, yes.
I remember that in the 90's, they tried to sell lambada as a fitness thing. There were some lambada dance groups, but... just that.
Yeah, it was all a lot of hype, and there was a rush to get at least two lambada movies in theaters (this and "Lambada"). I think they were both battling to title theirs "Lambada." Both movies bombed, and within a few weeks, the dance du jour was all forgotten, more or less.
shareIt was never really forbidden. Just a story that developed over time.
