Absolutely.

this is one of the few movies that blew me away when I first saw them latenight on telly. Never had heard of it before.

I only had experienced a similar reaction to Soylent Green, Logans Run and Thunderbolt & Lightfoot. Movies that I had not planned to watch, but once i zapped over into them, they kept me glued to the screen.

FOTI should warrant a 7.0 easily. I guess I always loved Milus' style.

The 5.3 rating here is a joke and that's why I don't take the IMDB rating's seriously. This is a fantastic film.

If you read the novel first, you will see why this movie adaptation doesn't bode well. If the movie was faithful to the novel, then it probably won't be so underrated (by viewers anyways. Film critics and other media types are a different story).

I would think that your (collective "your") criteria for rating a movie is not based on the same things as the general public.

Based on most of the comments related to this movie, many of you here seem to be military buffs and veterans who get thrills and/or rememberence out of the action and could care less about the other parts of the movie.

The public in general is going to look at the movie as a whole and will probably (as the rating reflects) find it a "less complete" film.

The same can be said for movies like "Grand Prix". Racing fans will love it while the general public will not be as thrilled.

It would be interesting if IMDB had two ratings; those of the GP and those who identify themselves as fans of the movie's genre.

I'm not saying that this was a perfect movie but, where "as a member of the general public" did you find fault in the movie?

Very few movies follow the book page for page but it was close enough for Government work. Under Siege, (also written by Steven Coonts and made into a killer movie) was actually on an Aircraft Carrier. Not a Battleship.

FOTI wasn't the best movie of all time but I think 8.5 would be alot closer to the truth than 5.3.

Any movie about Vietnam that shows bravery and heroics gets low ratings. Ones that show waste, tragedy and stupidity get good ratings.
