I believe the play is a lot deeper than the film, once you analyse it.
There's a whole subplot, deleted from the film, involving Mick's wife, Maimie (whom you don't see in the film) who has to stop her son from telling the police about Bull, as Bull would murder them. This makes the story a more tragic and human one.
Peter is actually an Englishman called William Dee, with a detailed backstory. And Tadhg is probably more evil than Bull, and only wants to marry the woman for her land.
I won't spoil the ending for you,, but it's a lot bleaker than the film.
