Not one message?? For Harris even!

...I know this isn't too well known a film but not a single comment or question... Well for my part this is one of my favourite films of all time...

Maybe I'm a bit biased being Irish, but for me Harris certainly gives one of (if not) THE best performance of his career! Equally Hurt turns in a masterful performance as the noble 'Bird'!!

just surprised that's all?

I'm surprised as well! The Field is my all-time favourite film -- it's masterful. Recently had the chance to visit the place (or at least the pub) in Ireland where some of it was made, which was a real treat. Jim Sheridan is a creative genius.

I'm from the US and still love this movie, so it isn't just the irish that appreciate it. Would love to know the pub where some scenes were shot in case I ever get to Ireland to visit.... if you don't mind MR. MacDonald?

This is one of several performances that made me realize that some of the older actors, regardless of my silly pre-conceived notions, still have the "juice" to really NAIL performances... the other one that really gained respect for me was Jack Lemmon in GLengarry Glen Ross...

I used to chase certain performers to the screen, i.e. see everything they made that I could... this one put Richard Harris on that list for me and John Hurt (who I was kind of watching already because of From The Hip). I'm also keen on picking other plays by Keane now, but haven't picked any up yet.

Anyone know how you phonetically pronounce Sean Bean's character name (Tadgh)?

reply

Can't remember how they pronounced it in the film but "Tadgh" is normally pronounced:

T (as in toe) - AI (as in thailand) - G (as in the beginning of great)

also spelled TAIDGH

I loved this movie! Saw it September 2004. Richard Harris...Richard Harris...what can you say?! Brilliant!! Second to none. One of the best movies I've ever seen and, believe me, I've seen a LOT! Have never been to Ireland even though I'm of pure Irish descent (2nd generation) but this movie made me feel like I was home...awesome

This movie has flaws, but it remains solid and exceptional.

I couldn't agree more on Harris and Hurt. Just tremendous, tremendous, tremendous. Not easy characters to pull off to such a masterful level.

Even if you don't care for Irish tragedy, the performances should draw one to see this movie if one appreciates acting and/or film.

Amazing, incredible performances all around. This was my first exposure to Sean Bean, what an introduction!

Richard Harris at his finest. He is sorely missed; still had a lot of great performances in him, no doubt.

Location Notes:

With a budget of £5 million, filming on The Field began on 02 October 1989 and lasted for eight weeks.

The Field was shot almost entirely in the Connemara village of Leenane, overshadowed by the wet and misty mountains of Connemara and Mayo.

The pub scenes in the film were shot in Gaynor's, one of three bars which serve this tiny one-street village.

Bull's House was a spartan stone cottage, subsequently inhabited by sheep, just beyond the village on the road to Clifden.

The Field itself was a little patch of bright green, enclosed by a dry stone dyke, beneath the dark Partry mountains. It was located about six miles outside Leenane on the right-hand side of the road to Westport, beside a little bridge.

The scene of the climactic fight between Bull and his son, and the American, was shot a few miles from Leenane at Aasleagh Falls, on the Erriff river.

Additional footage was created in Dublin's Ardmore Studios.

All the main cast in this film are fantastic, Brenda Fricker included, dispite her lack of lines. A great take on a great play: it's one of the few films that I don't mind the things they changed (The American as opposed to the Dublin Man, Tagdh being killed). I just wish that the film version of "Philadelphia, here I come" by Brian Friel would have been as strong as this.

I read the book by John B. Kean in 1997 for our Junior Cert. and enjoyed every minute, the film did briliantly bringing it all to life. Could'nt fault any of them. Harris, Bean and Berenger were all fantastic.
