Why did Jim want Edward to break inside his house?

Did Jim want Edward to break inside his house so he could make profit off of his property or did he want Edward to get busted for breaking inside his house? I tend to believe that he did it for wanting to get profit off of taking his father's property than to get Edward in trouble.

No, I think he didn't like Edward and set him up.

It was explained in the movie that Jim wanted to steal his father's locked up property so he could sell it and get his own van. His father was away and had the house locked up and Jim had seen previously that Edward could pick locks and so decided to use him to break inside. He left Edward to take the rap for the break in because he didn't want to face the wrath of his father, not because he wanted to ruin Edward's reputation (though he clearly didn't care about what would happen to Edward).

BUMP

Interesting bump. I think the motivation was to steal. He comments how Edward didn't leave scratches on the first lock he picked. If he just wanted to get Edward in trouble, that shouldn't have mattered.

I do admit I did wish Jim would've succeeded in stealing from his father so he can get money for his own van, I wouldn't of felt sorry for Jim's father if Jim had stolen from him.
