Chabrol is Great, Dr. M is not

Sorry, this film stinks. Check out Chabrol's other thrillers such as La Cermonie or Le Boucher before this one.

Well, La Cermonie and Le Boucher are classics. Is Dr. M really that bad? I'm a bit of a Chabrol completist and would love to see all his work, regardless of quality.

Last film seen: Robert Bresson's Pickpocket - Brilliant!

I don't think it's that bad, just a bit dated in some ways. But it seemed to mean a lot to Chabrol - he very much admired Fritz Lang's "Dr. Mabuse" movies, and wanted to try his hand at making one. I've read that he couldn't use the actual name, Mabuse, because the rights to it had been sold to a German producer, Harald Reiner, and Chabrol realized that he'd be impossible to work with. So he changed the name to Marsfeldt, but still kept the first initial, in homage to the original character. Chabrol even thought of making his movie a SILENT film - that's how much he liked the original 1922 film.

Flat, drab passion meanders across the screen!
