John Woo's Deer Hunter

Anybody else think this movie just stunk of Deer Hunter?

reply

The POW-camp scene somewhat did, but otherwise the film had (thematically) more in common with films like 'Shallow Grave' and 'A Simple Plan' than with 'The Deer Hunter'.

Deer Hunter was boring, overlong crap compared to this masterpiece.

This movie is basically an action version of The Deerhunter.

Three friends and their relationships before, during, and after the war.

The wedding, Prisoners of War (and how they escaped). How one of the guy's mind is completely warped after the war.

It's obvious that the movie is highly influenced by The Deerhunter.

Hey Deer Hunter is awesome! Yeah its slow in some parts but you have to appreciate the way they slow things down and tell the story like a novel.

David Lynch is the man! Oh yeah and watch Twin Peaks TV series!

reply

Yeah ok that was a bit unfair. Walken was good.

Deerhunter just didn't seem to justify the running time to me. Neither did Heat... meh.

I agree with you on Hea, way too drawn out. I thought the deer hunter was more natural and the story was great too, but i know where you're coming from too it does seem to drag at times.

It is called establishing the characters. You feel sympathy for what happens to the characters when you get to see who they are who what their bond with each other is as opposed to starting the film at their first landing in 'Nam.

Yes, exactly my thoughts... 'A poor man's Deer Hunter'. Less emotional impact, overacted and full of the typical nonsensical but appealing John Woo gunfights. The structure of the story was a lot like Frankenstein's monster: stitched together in awkward ways and clumsy as hell. But I say again... the gunfights are great if you're into that thing.

All that we see or seem. Is it but a dream within a dream?

LOL omg, just earlier today I was calling Tony Lueng the Chinese Deniro.

haha, so that makes Frank like that fat guy who becomes a vegetable in Deer Hunter and that makes Paul, Christopher Walken.

hahaha.

Omg that's classic.

Dude this film follows so many of the same plot points now that you mention it too! Like the weddings at the beginning (the jewish one was way sicker), Deniro verbally beats that guy when they are hunting like that Ringo guy beat the Chinese equivilent.

Then they both get into almost the same situation at the pow camp.

They both lost their friend in Nam, but Walken/Paul manages to "lose" the veggie. Omg lol, then Both of the Deniro's (chinese and american) after Nam go back to visit their wife, but they don't intend to stay. Then both Deniro's hunt the Walken's down, yet they don't really make amends.

They didn't rob anyone in Deer Hunter though, I guess Woo just added that in because he's John Woo and he has that in all his films.
