I agree.
Thornburg was an *beep* in the first movie, and this is in line with a lot of American movies portraying reporters as being heartless, selfish, and only caring about the story. Thornburg placed Holly and John in danger by revealing their identities on TV, which allowed Hans to realize Holly was John's wife and use her as a hostage.
In the second movie, they just run with this antagonistic role that he is an *beep* without justifying it. Holly claims that he endangered her kids, which is *beep* as her children were never in danger in the first movie. When Thornburg is shown to be unhappy that he got demoted from first class, the stewardesses act like he is being unreasonable, when he is being anything but. They also complain about his reporting of their airline, but they clearly lie to all the passengers about what is happening, leaving them in the dark about their fates.
When Holly first hears Thornburg's report and realizes that this is actually a serious problem and the stewardess has been lying to her, her first reaction is not "we're all going to die", but instead to calmly take out the tazer and knock him out with it as if he is the real problem. This is like shooting the messenger because you don't like the message. Holly is depicted as someone who would rather have her head in the sand and not know the truth about what is happening, and the movie gives off the impression that people are better off not knowing the truth and should be kept in the dark.
The news caused panic in the terminal, and rightly so. Terrorists have had control of the airport systems for quite some time, have killed an entire SWAT team, blew up an antenna, and have already intentionally crashed an aircraft killing all on board (why no one in the terminal saw or heard this is a mystery, and an example of bad writing). Furthermore, when the incident started, the head of the airport said planes would start dropping out of the sky in 2 hours, so at this point there are several planes flying over the terminal that are about to run out of fuel. The airport and authorities should have used this time to evacuate the terminal in a calm and orderly manner in order to reduce the potential death count. Instead the people in the terminal had to find out what was happening through a news broadcast that aired at a time when the planes were almost completely out of fuel, leaving them with very little time to escape.
Why the old lady calls him an *beep* at the end is anyone's guess. She didn't even hear the broadcast and has no reason to dislike him.
