Movies of 1990 Bracket Game: Round Three

https://lebeauleblog.com/2020/03/02/movies-of-1990-bracket-game-round-three/

Moviegoers had a lot of great options when they went to the multiplexes thirty years ago. Ghost and Home Alone were the highest-grossing movies of the year. Pretty Woman made Julia Roberts a star. Dances With Wolves dominated the Oscars beating out Martin Scorsese’s classic, Goodfellas.

Which movie will readers pick to represent the year? That’s up to you guys.

Last week, robbushblog predicted “There should be some bigger defeats this time around.” He was not wrong. Most of the matches in the second round of the game were pretty decisive victories. For example, Total Recall spanked the sci-fi sequel, Back to the Future Part III. The closest contest of Round Two was Edward Scissorhands vs. Pretty Woman and the Tim Burton fantasy still managed to win by three votes.

I was slightly surprised to see Pretty Woman and Home Alone knocked out early. They were two of the most popular movies of the year and I would say they have largely held up. But Le Blog readers are more of a David Lynch/Tim Burton crowd. So it’s not shocking that Wild at Heart and Edward Scissorhands advanced to Round Three.

By this point, we have lost most of the highest grossing movies of 1990 along with the big Oscar winners. With Dances With Wolves and Godfather Part III eliminated, our only Best Picture nominee left is Goodfellas which was nominated in several categories. Joe Pesci won for Best Supporting Actor.

Other than that, we have a few scattered awards. Dick Tracy took home statues for Original Song, Makeup and Art Design. Kathy Bates won Best Actress for Misery. And believe it or not, Total Recall won a special achievement Oscar for its visual effects.

Voting ends Friday at noon EST. Then come back next week for the semi-finals.
