Why were the Delta Force pretending to be French?

They were using a Eurocopter Panther as their helicopter of choice in this film which the French Navy uses and not the US Army:

Then they were using the French built Famas assault rifle which is the French Armed Forces weapon of choice:

Of course then the Delta Force tops it off by wearing berets to complete the French look. Yes, I know other US Special Forces like the Green Berets do wear berets sometimes in combat, but the Delta Force seemed like they were trying to be French in this film.

What's even more funny is the bad guys used M16s and the fictional San Carlos Army used Huey helicopters!

Thankfully Chuck carries his trusty M1911 with him, it can't be all French!

I can only assume that they got all their hardware on loan from the Philippines military where they shot the film, who in turn were supplied was French manufacturers.

The helicopter was an SA360 Dauphin helicopter (early single engine version of the Panther) and most likely because it was the cheapest and best helicopter they could get their hands on in-country for a long time for the production. It makes a very unique sound but they dubbed it over with the sound of a Huey the whole time.

I believe in that year, the French had the toughest military in the world and we wanted to make ourselves look as much as possible as the French army. Sort of like to intimidate the enemy
