"I hate people man"

Greatest movie ever...
Who needs Citizin Kane, Ben Hur, Millers Crossing and The Gayfather?

I just saw it yesterday, brilliant. That "I hate people speech" is classic. Yeah, and screw that overrated soulless yuppy crap Lost in Translation movie. The filmamkers of Deadbeat at Dawn really put their blood and piss into this thing.

Jim van Bebber is a great example of a director who can do a lot with a little. I can't wait to see the long overdue Manson Family (aka Charlie's Family), which has a great soundtrack by Download, by the way.

I don't know why "Lost in Translation" has come up twice in this small thread, but I suppose it's as appropriate an overrated yawn of a film as any to contrast with "Deadbeat At Dawn." Does anybody else feel there's a certain aesthetic kinship between this and Ray Dennis Steckler's movies?

It's funny you mention Sohpia Coppola. I always use her as an example of why women aren't as good at directing as men are. She is the most famous female director after all, or at least 2nd to Katherine Bigelow.

The hole in my argument is Bigelow though. I thought 'Strange Days' was a decent film, her best I've seen. But I saw her in person and she asked a few questions and she didn't seem like a director at all. More like a retired model.

Anyways, back to Deadbeat, yeah. I loved it. Fantastic movie.

I'd say that Mary Hannon is a pretty good director (American Psycho, I shot Andy Warhol), and Asia Argento is a phenomenal director, in a way almost the female version of Van Bebber (Scarlet Diva, The Heart is Deceitful Amongst all Things), it's just because of the sexism in the film industry, they simply don't get the chance like men do, and Bigelow only really made it because of James Cameron, and Asia because of her father.

As for the film itself, I wouldn't say it's THE best, but certainly one of, and there's no denying that Van Bebber is the Orson Welles of low budget exploitation. I just wish he could make more films.
