The disaster montage

During the "gimme some lovin" montage, there is a race where Cole is sandwiched in between two other cars. He is shown tapping his brakes and the two other cars end up colliding while Cole keeps going. Harry shakes his head in digust. I'm not a racing fan, so what am I missing? Why was this terrible for Cole?
