Choppy, Disorganized mess of a movie

First of all, I get that this was 1991. I also get that Tom Cruise was on the rise here meteorically and could virtually do no wrong. I like the guy as an actor. He's good and reliable. Duvall as usual excellent. However, the movie as a whole was a disorganized mess. Bad editing, rushed storylines, bad follow-up and no follow-through made the story go off the rails a bit.
