Days of Thunder prompted Paramount's dumbest choice in decades

Days of Thunder is not a great movie. Actually, it's quite terrible and I say that even though I like it. It's like comfort food on a cold day. You can just watch the scenes one likes while fast forwarding through the rest of the garbage.

But, this movie marked, in my opinion, Paramount's dumbest move over the past several decades.

And that is, it drove Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer to Disney.

Thunder underperformed and Paramount requested that the producers repay certain budgetary items to make up for the disappointment. Considering that Simpson and Bruckheimer made most of Paramount's biggest hits of the 1980s (Flashdance, Beverly Hills Cop 1 and 2, and Top Gun), one could see why they would have balked at the request and why they decided to leave Paramount.

Five years later, Simpson and Bruckheimer began a highly successful partnership with Disney, with some work with other studios. Simpson would die a year later, but Bruckheimer would continue the work of the company.

With Columbia, the company would make "Bad Boys" and its sequel.

With Disney would come "Crimson Tide," "The Rock," "Con Air," "Armageddon," "Gone in 60 Seconds," "Pearl Harbor," (which still made $200 million and a profit), the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies, "National Treasure," and many more minor hits.

Paramount's nickel and diming cost them the minds that made these hits.

On the other hand, a bit of irony occurs in that Bruckheimer became the television mega-producer of the "CSI" shows on CBS, as well as his other hits like "Cold Case", "Without a Trace," "Eleventh Hour" and "The Amazing Race."

The company that owned CBS also owned Paramount.

But, still, Paramount messed up big in nickel and diming the producers.

Disney knows not to do the same with Bruckheimer when he makes a "King Arthur," knowing that a "National Treasure" is just around the corner.

I wonder what Paramount thought about Disney's success later on.

I don't know about what when on with Bruckheimer and Paramount. But if that's what happened, it would certainly seem like Paramount's loss.

As far as 'Days of Thunder' goes, I don't agree that it's terrible. As a follow-up to 'Top Gun,' it's no surprise that it uses a similar formula. As a big budget film, I think the action is well-shot. I find Cruise and Duvall to be very enjoyable. Memorable score. Like 'Top Gun,' perhaps a few hokey moments......but all in all, an enjoyable action film.

Just because the movie doesn't take itself completely seriously doesn't make it a bad film. You yourself said you enjoy it, so they had to have done some things right.

reply

I have to agree with both of you. Mildly enjoyable...I catch myself watching it as we speak on Cinemax. BUT...that's only because its the final scene where Trickle wins. It's true that if the entire movie is on, I'm definitely skipping most of it, watching only the good action scenes.

dma-maillist is right about Paramount's regret for Days of Thunder. The extravagances of the crews on set and delays, blowing an original budget of 40 million out to 70 million. Plus the fact delays due to rain and cars breaking down were a nightmare- and the script that was never completed in the first place and was getting written while the movie was getting made. Tom Cruise was actually reading lines off his car's dashboard until he crashed his car. So they instead read lines into him from his earpiece.

Here's what Paramount's co-president Sid Ganis said about Days of Thunder. "Days was so difficult, so painful, all the way. There was almost no story, and no ending. It was just cars, going around a racetrack. We shouldn't have started without a script."

By the end of it they were calling it 'Days of Plunder'.

That's pretty funny. Days of Thunder is one of those weird films because it's pure eye candy, but it's so devoid of substance. At the same time it has so much style that there's actual substance to its style (if you know what I mean). It's the kind of movie that Michael Bay has been trying to make his whole career, pretty much copying all the camera techniques, shooting set up and so on that were used in this film by Tony Scott, but Bay just couldn't emulate it one bit to any effect. I think that tells you that Days of Thunder has something, even if it wasn't much.

People who trash Days of Thunder seem to expect it to be Schindler's List. I mean, if you want great entertainment, you watch Days of Thunder. If you want a movie with substance, you watch Schindler's List. It's like watching Cary Grant doing one of his zanier comedies like Bringing Up Baby. When you watch Bringing Up Baby, do you expect to take away from the film deeper meaning to life... or just do you just expect to have a good time??

reply

Exactly. Days of Thunder is just harmless entertainment plus it's like Citizen Kane compared to any Michael Bay movie.

Ain't no goddamn takes, ain't no goddamn motion picture!

Agreed! I'm not one much for car-racing, but I quite like DOT and Cruise, Duvall and Kidman are all very passable in their roles.

This.

People bashing this movie should be made to watch 'Driven' - a similar car racing movie to this starring Stallone. It's a truly crap movie and puts Days of Thunder into perspective. This film is a somewhat classic in terms of its themes and how it portrays such a generic concept (car racing) in such an interesting, visually exciting way. The cast in particular deserve a lot of credit as does the director for making this underappreciated film.
