How many People thought this movie was a *beep* joke?

the first time I saw it
I had to laugh cause nascar is
the biggest sport in america
ain't no way hollywood at the
time should come out and take a
*beep* on nascar.

the writing sucked, the jazzed it
up with good actors, but the acting
was definitely over the top

And drivers' behavior in the
movie is unrealistic
I woulda took a big turd on Tom Cruise
for acting in a crappy role such as this.
Tom Cruise was much better in Top Gun!!!!

reply

i agree with your post100%
movie stunk as much as cruise's acting

It was 1990 you dumb ass, EVERY film was like that!!! Films didnt have to be EXACT, and they still arent. Live with it, last time i watched this film i was about 6 and thought it was AMAZING mostly becuase id never seen stock car racing before.. or Nascar if your a yank. Was it even that big in 1990?

reply

Was it a crappy role or just a crappy actor who couldn't pull it off? And that name ... Cole Trickle. Soulds like cold pee.

reply

bobtheriaultjr, your original post reads as sheer poetry to me, and I agree with you 100%!!!
Topgun, rewritten for cars, and badly at that!

it was a good movie but cole trickle does sound messed up

but what about dick trickle? google him he was a real nascar driver

I would definitely say it is a joke. When I first saw it I wasn't a NASCAR fan at all and I thought it was stupid. Many years later NASCAR is my third favorite sport and I have been to about 50 races and I think it is even more stupid.

In Mexico senor, these are the years of sadness.

tell me this is joke?

the movie is fantastic, reall well done car scenes and drama, the movie doesnt let up or get boring at all!

no i aint even american, so dont really like nascar all that much....

This is YOUR LIFE and it is ending one minute at a time!

Cole Trickle, Harry Hogge, Russ Wheeler, Rowdy Burns, Buck Bretherton, Harlem Hoogerhyde....HOOGERHYDE? These names are BETTER than ANY character names in Will Ferrell movies. The film is amazingly, almost enderaringly silly in a very 80's manner.

At least the cars in the film were real.

Today, all the racing scenes would be done with tacky CGI.

To see the only real monster, one must look no further than the mirror.

I thought it was very well done. Movies can be scripted however they want. But there were tons of errors & goofs in it, mostly in the racing scenes, but still, was pretty awesome.

I think they probably got the name Cole Trickle from both the names niCOLE kidman and dick TRICKLE.

reply

I like this movie (NASCAR fan here) but there were so many errors in the racing scenes.

Still, a fun movie.

this movie was great. it was done in 1990, and can you name a better NASCAR or racing movie since 1990??? neither can i. how was the acting over the top? if you don't like Tom Cruise, then fine but the others put on a good performance. just try to imagine yourself watching this 17 years ago when it came out.

about Dick Trickle:
He was also widely noted for having drilled a hole in his safety helmet so that he could smoke while racing, and for installing cigarette lighters in his race cars. Trickle was allowed by NASCAR to smoke in the race car during yellow flag periods, and in the 1990 Winston 500 (now the Aaron's 499), Trickle was seen on live television by the in-car camera lighting up and smoking a cigarette and sipping a cold Old Style (brewed in LaCrosse, WI).

This movie was a lot of fun. You don't watch it expecting a masterpiece. You watch it for pure entertainment. Everyone knows what they're getting themselves into when they watch a Tom Cruise move with fast cars.

And don't tell me the acting was bad. Even if you're not a Tom Cruise fan, he's still been nominated for 3 Oscars. Robert Duvall and Nicole Kidman are both Oscar winners. Plus it has Michael Rooker, Randy Quaid (Cousin Eddy anyone?), John C. Reilly, and Cary Elwes.

Is it my favorite movie of all time? Not even close. But it's a lot of fun to watch.

reply

I agree, I really enjoyed this movie and have watched it multiple times. People expect too much and movies in the end are just for entertainment. I'm sure almost every movie that comes out makes mistakes, people whine and complain about every little thing. Well I'd like to see them try and make a movie and not make one mistake. Stop being so picky. I thought it was extremely fun and enjoyable. People saying the acting is bad too makes me laugh. There was nothing wrong with the acting, everyone was great and I thought Tom was perfect for the role. I think he's been great in every movie he's been in. Maybe people haven't watched enough of his movies or they just have something against him. Whatever it is, he obviously have been extremely sucessful.

NASCAR wasn't nearly as popular in 1990 as it is now.

Yeah it was, NASCAR was huge back in 1990 and Days of Thunder helped make it bigger. NASCAR just hadn't topped off in popularity back then, that happened in 2005. The loss and retirement of popular drivers combined with the economy has taken its toll on the sport in recent years, yesterday's race at Indianapolis had a lot of empty seats when in years past they were always full.

But here's what I don't get. Why was Russ Wheeler an antagonist? He and Cole were teammates, It was always commonplace for owners to have more than one racing team in their stables. It's not too many roosters in the henhouse, it's help out on the track! You having trouble in the race? Find your teammate and draft with him. Hell, Both cars running well means more points for Tim Daland in the owner standings. If anybody's the antagonist in this situation it's Harry Hogg for being such a selfish prick.

Russ Wheeler was the antagonist because he was a douche trying to wreck Cole on the track. It was not commonplace for owners to have more than one race team back in those days, it was a changing of the times that Rick Hendrick, who Tim Daland is loosely based on, helped create. Hogg was old school resisting the change that the sport was headed to and I'm pretty sure that was a real opinion shared by a lot of people in NASCAR at that time.

@ the OP's question:
Days of Thunder is a CLASSIC. Even with its exaggerated portrayals of racing action, it's still THE definitive NASCAR movie. There are so many lines from this movie that people quote in regards to racing that's it's no *beep* joke. Hans Zimmer's music alone makes this film great.

reply

seriously. NOBODY cares. nascar is a joke itself. a pseudosport based on the inability to make right turns. a bunch of high-speed billboards whizzing around a circle a thousand times pumping *beep* into the air for our families to breathe in order for, hopefully, a bunch of hick *beep* to
witness some moron die in a crash.

If nobody cares... then why are you on here?
