Help the UK DVD get released!

Studio Canal own the best print of this film and released it on DVD in France in 2003. As somebody on this board rightly said, during the French dialogue on that DVD there are no English sub-titles! The film is partly in English and partly in French. There is a nice DVD from Koch Lorber in USA with the solution to that problem but sadly the quality, although very good, does not match the Studio Canal DVD. What's the ultimate solution?

Optimum Releasing in London, owned by Studio Canal in France, can release "Daddy Nostalgie" in the UK, Region 2, best print with English sub-titles. Tell Emilie you love this film and would like Optimum to do this.

reply

I think that's a good idea- we need a UK DVD! And the Studio Canal master seems to be the finest available so I'll ask Optimum if they can.

reply

I agree, with Dirk Bogarde being one of the finest actors to come out of England and it being his last film, there should be a UK dvd.

reply

that's a very good point! Sir Dirk Bogarde was one of the best and Optimum should realise that and release it. They have done all other films he starred in, some in the boxed set so I think it's likely they'll do this one. Fingers crossed!

reply

I've asked Emilie at Optimum too. This DVD must come out with English sub-titles!

reply

yes, a dvd here in England is what we really need, as Dirk Bogarde was the star of this film!

reply

I asked Emilie at Optimum weeks ago but have not heard. I called them but was told there was a meeting going on but here's another contact to ask:

reply

Well I e-mailed a few days back but am still awaiting a reply. Dirk Bogarde was pure magic amongst actors and I agree, people here in England should be able to buy the Studio Canal DVD released by Optimum (with sub-titles)!

reply

I've been waiting a little while to hear too. Optimum must realise it's a popular film.

reply

I hope that Optimum Releasing do the DVD in England! This film is so cool.

reply

It's a nice meaningful drama, very relaxing to watch, very elegant and beautiful.

reply

I agree, I find this film therapeutic, I like watching it when I really want to relax and see something realistic, emotional and believable. Optimum must do that DVD. I'll ask now.

reply

There are few films like Daddy Nostalgie in that it gives a certain satisfaction to the viewer as it tells a story showing how precious life really is. Optimum would be stupid not to release the dvd in the uk. People are crying out for it!

reply

I'm with you all, this telling Optimum of our love of this classic is a good idea. After all that's how the labels know what films people want, from the consumers. I have the Studio Canal DVD (-got it late 2003 when it released-) and although it's crystal clear it's still annoying when Jane Birkin speaks all that French to her mother and I can't understand a bloody word!

reply

as I told a lady at Optimum when I phoned & requested this dvd on Monday, there's a scene in this film where Daddy (Bogarde) says to his French wife: "You never speak English anymore." I mean, how funny is that as we need the English sub-titles!

reply

Absolutely! Good point and if the wife did speak English, there would be little need for us to ask Optimum for the DVD! This must come out soon, no doubt.

reply

so right, there's the dialogue all except when Dirk Bogarde & Jane Birkin had conversations in English basically. There's at least 40 mins of French dialogue in the film (if not more) and if you're watching Studio Canal's dvd and don't speak French you will only feel sad, like the story.

reply

I think that the good parts are mainly where Daddy reconciles his relationship with his daughter. In these scenes the conversation is in English and also highlight the story more than parts in French. But nevertheless, the French narration must be understood. We do so need the DVD with English subs.

All Optimum need to do is get the master from STUDIO CANAL, their parent company, and add the subs to that very print. Classification will be a piece of cake as it was only a PG (family viewing) and Tartan Video did it on VHS already. Lets keep asking for it!

reply

From watching the canal dvd, that was all I could understand, the parts in English! I don't speak French either. I asked Optimum about this a week ago and am awaiting their answer. Has anyone else had any response from them?
