Gerard Depardieu perfect!

Jose Ferrer does a pretty good Cyrano. I thought Depardieu's version was weak and uninspired.

I couldn't agree more!
Three years ago, you could have ask me about Cyrano and I probably would have told you "guy with long nose". After being introduce to cyrano from my french teacher, I could not stop talking about him. The movie was Exceptional, and it seems that you have taken the words right out of my mouth, he was indeed born for the part. After seeing the version of Depardieu, he took away any curiosity that I had wanting to see the other versions. Cyrano and him became one, to the point that everytime I think of Cyrano I find it hard to not picture Depardieu, I may not know what it's like watching it as an english speaking person(though the subtitle was pretty good) but I do know that Gerard speaking french,the tone, the voice, and the mood, it was just flawless.
He did so well. Gerard knew he did a fantastic job when even after the movie was done he kept the beard since he had gotten so much into the character and that's not something that happens with any movie where the actor,is so inspired that he can't get out of the character that he's playing.
As long as I live people around me will know about Cyrano, because he has inspired me in so many ways(has possibly change the way I viewed poets, well not possibly, definetly.

I also prefer Jose Ferrer as a Cyrano then Gerard.

I think I prefer Jose Ferrar, but it's a close race. Really a nose and nose race.

I saw this film for the first time when I was about 14/15 years old. I am now 27 and must have seen it hundreds of times. It was ne of the first DVDs I bought. Still haven't managed to see it at the cinema, always hoping the independent film cinema I usually go to will eventually decide to show it.

Anyway, I digress. The thing that struck me first about this film was that it was in rime and how well it worked! But the wonderfull sensitivity of the main character, his love for poetry and for his own independence, his strenght and weaknesses and his amazing sad eyes made me fall in love with the film.
I proceded to find out all I could about Cyrano. Indeed he existed, had a considerable nose and wrote a small book about travels to other planets (which I managed to get my hands on). I saw a televised play at about the same time and read the real play, in french and much later in the most recent english version which I think doesn't work so well. This version of the play will be in a theater in town close to xmas, I'll book tickets as soon as I can (I have seen a modernized version once that was a bit poor, will give this one a try...).

I find it hard to dissociate Depardieu from Cyrano. It was like the role was written for him. He OWNS the film.

It was Depardieu's and this films fault that during my teenage years I dreamnt of a larger than life romantic poet that would swoop me of my feet. ahwwww, bless.

It is still one of my favourite films (I don't have ONE favourite fim, it would be too hard to choose). His monologue about independence of thought and art (and pain) remains as a wonderfull inspiration.

I first saw Cyrano when I was too young to know how to read (it was this version of it that I first saw it), then I saw Roxanne with Steve Martin and I learned it was based on the play which I looked up on then I saw this version again and then the Jose Ferrer, and then I was immediately in love with Cyrano. I am an American and some of the co workers at my job have never heard of Cyrano, I educate them and that is what you should be doing, educating anyone who has never heard of Cyrano. Mostly to guys who feel that they don't get the girl.

It's amazing; after seeing this version, I can't imagine anyone else in the role.
