Utterly beautiful film. A true masterpiece.

Gerard Depardieu was robbed of an Oscar. I can't believe Jeremy Irons in Reversal of Fortune won over this astounding performance. He was in almost every frame of this film and my interest did not wane for a moment. He was captivating.

It's a great film.

Correction; it really is a masterpiece.

I think he was a bit unlucky to miss out, but it was a greater shame for the film to miss out on the Best Foreign Language Award. This is not to say the film doesn't have its faults. It's no masterpiece, but an impressive production nevertheless.

During the 1990 Oscar season there was a rumour that Depardieu had been involved in a gang sexual assault as a young boy which didn't help his or this wonderful film's chances for Best Actor and Best Foreign Film. Also, I suspect Hollywood would rather give an award to an acting performance in its own language. Has any actor/actress won an Oscar for giving a performance in any other language but English (I think Benicio Del Toro may have primarily spoken Spanish in 'Traffic' but the rest of the film was mainly in English, and French-speaking Jean Dujardin was completely silent in 'The Artist').

Yes -- Marion Cotillard in La Vie en Rose.

Also Roberto Benigni in La Vita E Bella.
