Lowest point in Johnny Depp's Career:

Lowest Point in Johnny Depp's Career: Cry Baby "You got it Allison... you got it Raawww!"

WORST line in ANY movie ever. I am a big fan of Johnny Depp's work and acting but that line alone ruined the entire movie.

First time I heard him say it... I was sitting there... shocked going "WHAT THE *** JUST HAPPENED?!"

What do you guys think?

reply

With all due respect, I disagree - I didn't watch 21 Jump Street and I didn't like Johnny Depp back then, thinking of him as just another heartthrob on the new Fox Channel, and quite possibly "this month's 16 magazine centerfold". Cry-Baby helped him to break that image, in fact, shatter it. I cringed when I heard he was going to play the lead character, but he's funny as hell, and this was one of his early films, so how can it be a low-point? You can't have a low-point when you're just getting started.

Sure, the "raw" line was ridiculous - it was meant to be. Cry-Baby was a spoof of those ridiculous 50's teen flicks. My initial disappointment with the film was that some of the humor was a little too "good-natured". Do you have the DVD, or at least do you know someone who has it, that could lend it to you, or copy it for you? It includes deleted scenes which would make it more like a Waters film. I would guess that Imagine/Universal made Waters take those out, such as Wanda being kidnapped and forced to pose for a porno photographer in a giant martini glass, and Milton vomiting on the judge from the helicopter as he and Hatchet-Face are on their way to rescue Cry-Baby.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I take it that you've just seen it for the first time recently. From your comment, you apparently can't get the movie out of your mind. I recommend you give it another chance. That's what I did - I wasn't sure what to make of it at first, then I couldn't stop thinking about it, then I gave it another chance, then it finally sunk in. Then I thought, "okay, it's still pretty funny even if it's weak in some spots". Today, I don't think there's anything weak about it - not since it parodies the weak moments in the genre it was intended to rib - people falling in love just like that, the leading lady's parents/grandparents suddenly changing their minds and jumping on the bad-boy bandwagon, all so the film can rush to a generic happy ending to please the studio by keeping the movie under budget, and putting a smile on the faces of post-war teens. I'm not sure how long I'd last watching the real movies, since they took themselves so seriously, but Waters did it and made fun of it so we don't have to.

I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked.

No actually I have seen this movie for the first time quite a few years ago and just watched it recently... and when that part came up it reminded about why i laughed so hard in the first place.

Yes i realize this movie was to rip off the high-school 50's type movies (Grease, American Graffiti). But in all honesty, I did enjoy the movie. The movie itself isn't bad with some obvious errors in it (with the sound of the hammers hitting the bar during the scene in the license factory) but that one part, and that one part alone makes EVERYTHING about Johnny Depp ruined lol. His facial expression and tone of voice is just SO messed up in that point.

I appreciate the reply, I have never received a reply so big before over one of my random moments. And another thing, I also appreciate that you were not just "OMFG YOU SUXORS NUUBZ!!!!! I LUV J.D!! GOTOHELL WTFOMFGZORS!!"

At least there are still intelligent people on this planet. lol

awww... not nearly as big as your reply... :(

wow. So .. alex c0ld. I think thats really nice, that you can disagree with someone else and argue your point without pushing it into people face and trying to make them believe the point that you are trying to make. We need more people like you.

reply

The first time I saw this movie I was 14 and I laughed so hard that I cried.
Ever since then whenever I feel down I watch it and it makes me feel really good and happy...in my mind this is a great movie and Johnny was great as Cry Baby...but I also accept not everyone is going to like the style...just because you don't like the movie and role he took that does not make the movie bad...some people adore this movie and totally get it, others won't and taht's fine but...

One thing I never understand is if you dislike a movie why post about it?
If I dislike a movie I just never watch it again and leave it there...

I felt awkward deciding to buy this movie. How observant of the OP to notice one line affecting the entire movie.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Personally I don't think Johnny Depp has had a 'low point' in his career yet. He really gets into his characters and though you might not like some of his movies or his characters I don't think he has hit a low. I mean maybe its because I love this movie for its over the top cheesiness but alex that line makes me cringe every time I watch it but that is the fun to me. I can see why this might be his 'low point' to you if you didn't like the movie.

I am the reason Hollywood keeps churning out crappy movies with no development or plot.

reply

I'd have to disagree - I think he has had a low point and it was called "The Astronaut's Wife" - but it's really fascinating that two of the prettiest people in Hollywood, Johnny Depp and Charlize Theron, have gone on to do such interesting work. "Monster" - who knew!! And of course "Sweeney Todd" - wow.

"It's as if God created the Devil...and gave him...JAWS"

Sure it's a spoof, but I don't think it's a funny movie. I actually agree it's Johnny Depp's lowest point in his career.

reply

omgAh! just Don't take it seriously, just enjoy it :F

reply

yes I cant believe he actually accepeted the part

I also disagree. That's one of my favorite movie lines of all-time. But then, I love ridiculous campy movies. I love that Cry-Baby makes fun of itself, is insanely quotable, and utterly absurd. And that it takes pride in all of those things.

And as far as a low-point in his career - have you seen Private Resort yet? It is the biggest bag of suck that ever happened. And it takes itself far too seriously.

reply

how can u not like it?! ITS SOOOOO FUNNY... becasue of the random lines...
"YOU GOT IT RAW".. god i nearly wet myself
i totally agree with baspicer

no havent seen private resort bu twould just for johnny.. sure it cant be that bad?! haa

reply

Oh yes, Private Resort IS that bad. It thinks it's a serious teen sex comedy, when it's really a poorly directed, poorly timed B grade (at best) teem sex comedy. It's awful.

At least Johnny Depp does his best. Even that can't save that suckfest, though.

reply

Worst line in ANY movie??? Have you seen Titanic? There have to be at least three that can beat that. And that was a block buster. This was a B grade movie. I can let you have the worst line in any johnny depp movie.

reply

I'm just curious at to know what lines in Titanic did you find *cheesy*? Please, quote them.

reply

I absolutly disagree. I love this movie, dispite it's few lame-ish lines. Johnny Depp can pull off nearly any part. This is actually one of my favorite movies he's in.

reply

"You got it RAWWW" is one of the best lines in the movie! Do you even KNOW Waters work? Try his wonderful underground trilogy of Pink Flamingos, Female Trouble and Desperate Living.

reply

I was the opposite - it was this film that got me interested in him as an actor and I decided he was very good & someone to keep an eye out for.

Prior to this film, I thought he was just another teen idol on TV that would never make it anywhere else (I disliked 21 Jump Street).

But in this role he showed promise and potential.

reply

I didn't care for the movie.. but damn did he look sexy in it? x3

Still, it's light and funny.
