Why does he keep getting those flashbacks?

Now I'm sure he must've been CONFUSED, watching his mom get f#cked by another guy and didn't get over it since, but how is it relevant to the plot? Or they trying to add some light to what would otherwise be a film with 95% of it shot in the middle of nowhere with no dialogue?

Point taken and I think the point of the flashbacks was to somehow provide his character with a certain degree of angst that would aid him in his survival while also leading to some sort of catharsis in which he matures in the wild and gets over his anger issues.

And it gives the audience a reason to sympathize with the character while also leading to more dislike towards his mother.
