IMDB rating

I was just wondering why, if IMDB has its own rating system of 10 stars, do people feel compelled to come up with their own number followed by some very enlightening description and post it at the beginning of their critique of the movie. We've all seen them, 3 stars, 4 stars, 5 stars "STAR RATING:*****Unmissable****Very Good***Okay**You Could Go Out For A Meal Instead*Avoid At All Costs ...". I think I've even seen a 6 star system. Yeah, it is no big deal. But I was just wondering.

This is primarily people who already had an established system in their head for ranking movies, followed by later joining IMDB and not wanting to adapt to the new system.
