Rupert and natasha: what a horrible couple

They were such an obnoxious pair of british twits, completely lacking in any self-awareness or manners, but too cowardly to stand up for themselves because they were too busy trying to seem civil and worldly. The moment when Colin gets punched in the stomach was amazing, he didn't seem to realize at all that he had just insulted a crazy italian mans' ancestors. overall this was a great film in its commentary about how messed up modern couples are. good riddance!

He didn't insult anyone's ancestors, only the psycho (Walken) *thought* he did.
Unsurprisingly, considering all his other ideological quirks.
He did "insult", if that is the right term at all, him, his host. But not his ancestors.

And I can see why you would find this couple unsympathetic. They weren't particularly likeable, although Natasha's character was at least "human".

It's a very weird movie. At this point, I am still unsure about my feelings towards it.
It's not pleasant to watch but it is intriguing.

I'm not sure that's a very important distinction. There's no question what he said was very rude & flippant.

Been making IMDB board posts since the 90s, yet can't bring up any from before December of 2004.

It was rude, yes - or flippant, that's even better.
But I still say I don't think he insulted his ancestors at all, except by implication. However, this is a sort of implication that can only be "read into" by the recipient.
I think the point of Robert's (over)reaction to this remark is precisely to show, quite clearly at that point, that he was deranged, as well as the general direction from where his sense of having been slighted is coming.

Sick bastard.

I agree. They weren't especially well written characters, and the movie suffered from the get go because of that.

In what way was Colin’s comment insulting?
