The House ... Help Me understand???

What happens to Lilly's family's house? Why did they not go back there after the camp? Reading the reviews here and watching the film I am under the impression that the Kawamuras were forced to "get rid" (obviously for pennies on the dollar) or abandon their house. Did our government make people sell their houses? Worse yet were the houses taken away from them? This film was very opaque about that.

The more I think about this chapter in American history the more disgusted I get!
