Universal instead of MGM/UA

Anyone know why the series was transfered over to Universal? Any articles on the subject?

Was a sequel not of any interest to the first company?

reply

doing no better 20 years ago with its franchises than it is now. MGM/UA sold the ownership of childs play back in 1988 to Universal.even though Child's Play was a big hit, they just couldnt afford it to continue with the sequels.
little did they know they would go out of business soon after. every franchise with MGM has continued to get stalled to this day. even back then they were so strapped for cash.

also at that point in time MGM/United Artists wanted to go for a family friendly brand.they wanted to revamp their image. they wanted to distance themselves from horror. so they sold the rights to Universal.

while Child's Play 2 became a big success. had MGM done Child's Play 2, they probably wouldnt be in the rut they were in.

Thanks for the speedy reply. I know MGM/UA were always in a jam, they were fairly independent for a studio. They also had ties to Orion which produced the Robocop films and most of Woody Allen's films fromt that period. They also did Silence of the Lambs, they apparently used the last of their spendings on that film's Oscar campaign.

yea they had trouble just in getting that Robocop remake to finally get made.

kinda sad when studios end up going bankrupt and just having problem after problem.
