The book was as gripping as the movie. She played herself as someone who is difficult to act as. It was beautiful. Going public with her life was an inspiration and an encouragement. Often if we find someone can relate to us because they've been there, it becomes easier to face. What she did and what I do every day is to have the courage and strength to face and endure something we didn't ask for. Noone ever asks for genetic medical whatever's? (I don't want to give her away. I would really like to talk to Patty Duke at the very least and tell her how greatful I was that a "movie star" went public with what she did in this story. I don't want to meet her because she's a movie star, but because of this and her other related book.

I agree with you a-mcdowell that this book and movie were outstanding. I am a manic depressive and it was like looking at myself up there on the screen. Her depressive and manic moods are exactly how my moods are. Unless somebody lives through the hell of such a life like this they have no idea what it is like.

I am so thankful for this movie because of Ms. Duke's courage to protray a movie such as this I could see my need to go to the doctor and get the help I needed. I knew something was wrong with me but I did not know what was wrong with me. It was a relief when I actually saw someone else who had the same problems as I had. I thought i was all alone in this world and crazy. I am like you I would like to thank Ms. Duke personally for her courage.

My younger sister planned to see this movie as well in 1990 but she committed suicide in a mental institution. It was a very sad time in my life because I lost one of my best friends. She was the only one in my family that understood me.

I recently got a PAL/VHS (I live in the UK)video of this movie from ebay.co.uk. It is a really excellent film.

Such a moving story. So many surprises and not all of them pleasant. I found a really nice DVD of this from movielead dot com.
