How on earth did this get an R in america? It only got a PG over here in England. A PG in England is recommended for ages 8 and over. R is 17 in America. That's nearly ten years difference. What is so bad in the film that the American's found it necessary to slap an adult rating on it?

It was a 12 here in the UK. Remember seeing it on screen 3 at the Odeon Leicester, right after seeing White Fang

Yeah but it was lowered to a PG for the video without being cut.

No - there were cuts for the video release - as the 12 rating wasn't available at the time. A lot of nudity was cut from it.
