reply

Are you serious this movie isnt released on dvd in the US??I bought a region 1 copy on ebay so i assumed it was an american copy(im from OZ)??Maybe you should give ebay a go if you are after a copy on dvd??

reply

i dont usually buy movies off ebay, i got screwed over once when i bought scarface before the anniversary edition came out hopefully if we can get enough fans we can petition new line cinemas to come out with it which would be cool. what does OZ stand for by the way

Sex is evil, sex is a sin, sins are forgiven, so stick it back in

reply

OZ is australia!I honestly would have thought it would have been released in the US if i bought a region 1 copy..weird.Oh well..yeah hopefully they will release it your way real soon coz its such a great dvd:)

reply

its such a good movie, now the dvd you have does it have any special features? thanks for telling me what OZ means, I learned something new today!

Sex is evil, sex is a sin, sins are forgiven, so stick it back in

reply

No problem!Yes the dvd does have special features..commentary by director Robert Shaye,'Mett Bob Shaye" documentary,"Image"..a short film by Bob Shaye,TV spots and theatrical trailer.I would have loved interviews with the cast as they are today, especially Chris Young as you dont see or hear from him and i loved him in this movie!

reply

That would be cool, seeing a retrospective as you see on the Stand by Me with the actors how they look today recounting their experiences on the set of the movie, it would be cool for them to do a 15 yr anniversary collection since it is next year. I agree you dont hear much from the cast besides michael mckean (even though he was in a few short scenes)

reply

i didnt notice anything when i watched it on dvdbut then again before i had bought the dvd i hadnt seen the movie in a few years so i have no idea..i hope there's no scenes cut!Why do such a thing???

reply

I could be completely wrong .. i hadnt seen this movie in years as well..it seemed shorter

This is truly one of my favorites that hardly anyone else knows about unless you were there when it was released. I was about eleven when it debuted on The Movie Channel in 91 and I nver forgot it.

Sooo, may favorite scenes, Ranger Camp, Tap Dance class, party/ drunken "cap" gun shooting/pany raid scene, dick measuring contest...etc. All classic, and the last of those 50's sex crazed coming of age movies, like Mischief and Porky's.

reply

i know, its a shame its pretty much unheard of as its definetely one of my faves!I went as far as paying 40 dollars for it on ebay coz its not released in australia and probably never will be which is disappointing!I must have been about 9 or 10 when it was 1st released!

My best friend and I used to watch this on almost a nightly basis in High School. The two party scenes are great, as well as the music. I agree, it's a hidden little gem.

Horrordame:

thanks. Thats what I was thinking reading the reviews!!

I loved this movie too!!! I think I still have it on tape somewhere (It was one of those movies I just had on tape and used to watch when I was sick etc..) when I get the DVD I'll dig out the vhs and see if theres a difference. I swear though, I've probably seen this at least 20 times. Just thought about it tonight..

reply

i really liked this movie too.... im different from most of you guys though because the first time i watched it was yesterday. my mom likes buying random videos from good will... the only reasons we still have a vhs. haha.

reply

I was born in 1990, when it came out. So I only saw it a few months ago...but I really like it. I'm watching it again right now. Everyone is mentioning Chris Young, but I totally love Keith Coogan. He's adorable.

reply

I can only remember seeing this movie a few times during a summer many many years ago on HBO, but I remember tihnking it was a cool movie. I just thought of it and looked it up on here. I'm on my way to go buy it on DVD. :)

If you are a fan of the movie "Book Of Love" then look for the book from which it was made, William Kotzwinkle's "Jack In The Box". He also wrote the screenplay.

An award-winning author, he was tapped by Hollywood to write for some various films I think are not important to mention further right now.

I am so glad to read so many positive comments; I am not the only one - HorrorDame is not the only one.

The book is waaaay better (as usual). However, it is not the ideal intro to Kotzwinkle. I am not actually sure which book _would_ be best to start reading him.

He has a supreme talent for dense, evocative turn of phrase and poignancy; for those who appreciate gossamer prose of sheer beauty and humour of both delicate hilarity and of raucous jape.

A friend handed me "The Fan Man" in 1981 or so. There is no way to prepare you for that book, other than to say it made me laugh so hard I puked cola out my nose. We both immediately took turns assuming identities from that book, and to this day, levity is never further than one phrase away; e.g: ... "have a dorky day" (absolutely nothing to do with any previous meaning of dorky).

"Fata Morgana" must must must be done as movie or theatre before I croak. A Robin Williams (as Toymaker) movie, I think, borrowed a bit from this book.

"Midnight Examiner" was only worth the resale I got on the hardcover. Well written, sure, but no "McGuffin" as Hitchcock might say.

He won a National Book Award (US) for "Swimmer In The Secret Sea", but I suggest you leave that until well past midway in enjoying his offerings.

"Elephant Bangs Train" - short stories. Maybe this is the best intro.
Gems included here are:
-"The Doorman" (Charles makes sissy & cucky) ..and
-"The Jewel of Amitabha" (hunf-tweet) ..and
-"Nippy" ( - was a low cur, born of the streets)
..and a short story from his BookOfLove/JackInTheBox genre.

If you like his books, check out Kurt Vonnegut's early stuff and Richard Brautigan's "Confederate General From Big Sur", "Revenge Of The Lawn" and "Willard and His Bowling Trophies"

Book Of Love / Jack In The Box Trivia: The handgun fired in the book is not in the least shiny and the bullet launches end-for-end out the barrel in a ball of flame.

The book and movie are great. After reading the book, certain scenes became a little different (knowing their orginal context), but it did not ruin the movie for me at all.

The book is hard to get into at first (weird details about some not very interesting things), but stick with it... it gets funny.

I am currently working on the Wikipedia entry for the Movie. Feel free to add to it!

I wonder if it is edited? I've never seen the R-rated version released (but the trailer for it is on the VHS of House Party) but IMDB lists the running time at 82 minutes. Well my VHS of Book of Love is in hand right now and it says 86 min on the back of the box. Strangely enough, it says 88 minutes on the actual cassette. I don't know if it's a typo or what. My VHS of Suburban Commando (don't ask) lists the normal running time, PG rating and has a red top to the cassette, but a copy I had like 8 years ago that was an all black cassette which had a longer running time and it said it was PG-13. I recall I think I might have a few other tapes like that and it's what the cassette says thats legit. Was New Line secretly putting director's cut into the regular boxes or something? Weird stuff.

PS, while typing that I fast forwarded my Book of Love VHS. From the opening New Line logo until the New Line logo after the end credits, the VHS is exactly 88 minutes long. So whoever wants to know, just see how long the DVD version goes for and you should be able to tell if it's edited or not.

reply

Thanks for that vital information! That helps out a lot on how to tell if you have a edited version or not from New Line Cinema.
