Why is it so damn long?

The title being singular, why are we getting more than one major earthquake? And what does a sniper have to do with it? Why is he in the movie at all? Isn't the quake bad enough? I find no fault with the acting or story, but the movie needed to be pruned. There's no need to pad this out to almost 3 hours. This movie is like the earthquake itself: It doesn't know when to quit.

It was orginally made as a two or three part tv miniseries.

The sniper subplot was the worst part of the original two-part miniseries version because it went on forever and ever and ever and to see it happening AFTER the quake was ridiculous. It would have been far more intriguing if after the quake you had a scene of the sniper and his target now being forced to work together for survival but instead we had to see this thing drag on and on to a depressing conclusion (as did two other subplots).
