Molly Ringwald

Is this the movie that started the demise of her career?

reply

According the person that wrote that review there on the main page, it is lol.

My personal opinion is that beyond teenage acting (even tho she is almost 40 now and still acting) she hasnt really gotten better at it. Like very many that start out acting when young or adolescent, she didnt seem to really get anywhere once she grew up.

I think she was far better an actor when she was young then she is now, oddly enough. She was just better at being a teenager.

Why she took the role of Besty in the first place is vexing, it is a fairly small role and even tho the movie is revered, it obvioulsy not in the top 10.

No, her career was already in decline--starting when she parted ways with John Hughes. For Keeps? seems to be the start of it, and no one even remembers Fresh Horses, but I think it was her first failed attempt at an adult role.

At this time she also turned down Pretty Woman, but she wasn't the only one, for the script on paper seemed nothing like the finished product. Besides, who wouldn't rather play a bride than a prostituted woman?

If anything, this film might have broadened her appeal, if it had been a hit. It was really more an Alan Alda vehicle--and he would find much more success in character roles than as a leading man himself.

She also turned down "Ghost", and her hairstyle in this movie is hideous.

I agree about her hairstyle in this film. She doesn't have a pretty enough face to wear her hair that short. There were a couple scenes where she looked downright ugly from side view. I somehow got the feeling she wanted to show off a sophisticated look with her short hair and "hip" clothes, and that it was something all her own, not what the director initially wanted her to wear. Unfortunately, she doesn't have the looks of Audrey Hepburn or Mia Farrow to pull off the hairdo. Plus everything she wore completely clashed with this film.

FWIW, things like hairstyle and costumes aren't the decision of the actors. The actors are pretty much stuck with whatever the director and stylist come up with. She could object and refuse, but then she risks losing the gig.

Thank god. No way could I see her as a prostitute.

She isn't really traditionally "pretty". She can look pretty with the right hair but it would take some work to make it believable. She is definitely not sexy...at all.

I was under the impression that many women in prostitution aren't traditionally pretty either. But then we are talking Hollywood here (Disney's Touchstone Pictures, no less), althougb the film was not even originally called Pretty Woman. It was called $3000 before they schmaltzified the script and cast the leads. (Willem Dafoe read for Gere's role.)

If it isn't, it should have. She is easily the worst thing about this movie. She has no appeal whatsoever. Top five of my most annoying and dis-likable actresses out there...right behind Ann Hathaway, Julianne Moore and Tori Spelling.

On the other hand, Anthony La Paglia was easily the best thing about this movie. Great character actor.
