Rob Lowe wasn't very good.

He doesn't have the charisma to play a role like this. I kinda have a feeling it would have been better if it had been the other way around with Spader instead.

reply

To each their own. I disagree and believe that's he's never been better in any other role than he was in this one.

The best things in life are not things

reply

Completely agree with gilb.

I think Lowe is a really good actor.

That said, this, to me, is still the best thing he's ever done.

Wait a minute... who am I here?

reply

I must disagree. He was perfectly sinister, cold, and cunning. He was Scary. I wish he would play more dark roles like this one. I enjoy watching him, silly or dark roles, either. Just a great actor...Luv him on Parks & Rec.

reply

He sucked in Tommy Boy...how would he be able to pull this off? Spader is an infitely better actor than Lowe....

reply

Completely disagree with the OP. As a couple of posters have already indicated, Lowe was excellent in this film, and, imo, it remains the single best acting performance of his career. Great movie, overall, and great performances all across the board, including acting, direction, cinematography, editing & score; cool production sets and intriguing plot & storyline, too. Ahead of its time, and thoroughly entertaining, too.

reply

I thought Rob Lowe was excellent here; so believably calculating & sinister. I think his character really leaves a mark.

reply

Amen! Lowe doesn't have 1/10 the acting talent necessary to pull this off. Spader would have done much better! Bizarre how no one else realized this.

reply

I kind of agree. Although it was nice to see him Lowe was just missing something. He somewhat reminded me of American Psycho's Patrick Bateman, yet not quite reaching it.

Spader is always good in either bad boy or good boy roles, recently watched a lot of early Spader films and he's pretty good in Tuff Turf and True Colors 1991 with John Cusack as the bad boy. Amazing as the psychotic redneck in New Kids and his other bad boy roles in Pretty in Pink and Less Than Zero.
