In retrospect, does this seem...

...that Lowe and Spader are playing the part you'd, at first reaction, assume was played by the other? When this film was out, I remember that being a huge attraction to the film, that Lowe was so evil, and Spader, coming off of Pretty In Pink, and although he'd played good guys before (Tuff Turf), PIP was what he was known for, and from playing such a creep in that, now was playing the innocent/good guy. I can recall being somewhat shocked by Lowe in this, thought he was phenomenal, as was Spader....

But just wondering, opinions please, if it still seems that way. Of course, even if it does, it couldn't possibly be at the level of shock it was in 1990, since Spader has played similar roles since (White Palce springs to mind), but just the fact that Lowe is so good as this horribly evil character. Can't remember Lowe playing anything THIS evil, although in Tommy Boy he was bad.... I haven't seen it in a long time, I'm curious at what my reaction will be. I have a feeling it will still have some impact.

No, it doesn't seem odd to me that Rob Lowe plays the sort of character he does in this film, because he's now starring in the DirecTV commercials where he plays "Super Creepy Rob Lowe", "Painfully Awkward Rob Lowe," "Crazy Hairy Rob Lowe", "Overly Paranoid Rob Lowe" etc.

and he played that creepy doctor in "Behind the Candelabra"
