Did this film inspire a TV show?
I could swear I saw ads for a TV show that bore an amazing resemblance to this movie, but I don't find any reference to it. I thought it even had the same title.

I'm going to take a guess: the short-lived 1991 series Brooklyn Bridge had a passing resemblance to this movie. It centered on a young boy who lived in a Brooklyn brownstone with his parents and his immigrant grandparents (Marion Ross and Louis Zorich, an actor who reminds me of Armin Mueller-Stahl) and was heavy on nostalgia. I remember watching the pilot episode and feeling it had a lot in common with this film.
