Why does the Ice Man still go to work?

He's been the drug kingpin since before the first movie and he still shows up everyday to be a cop? What's the point of being a rich drug kingpin if you still have to have a day job?

Why does the Ice Man still go to work?

So you can keep tabs on your employees, and arrest the competition.

The way i see it, every successful drug dealer in America(who is an American) should always have a legit job to cover his or her tracks as a dealer. The Ice Man had a perfect job to lay his tracks: A cop. He could clear all the red tape that lead to his existence/profession as a cop, which he did in the movie. I never in a million years would've guessed who it was. Also true about keeping tabs on your players and arresting the competiting dealers.

One thing still puzzles me about the 1st movie. If the Ice Man was that particular cop, why wasn't his character introduced in the 1st 48 hrs.? I figured if Ganz and Reggie stole his money, and he was that pissed about it, he would've tried to take out Reggie and Ganz while Ganz was at large and Reggie was out of jail with Jack. He decided to wait until Reggie was on parol for real, and then his contract was declared active i guess.

I also couldn't figure out why Cherry Ganz(Ganz's brother) wanted to kill the Ice Man in the end of the 2nd movie. He had no beef with him. Hell, he even agreed to kill Reggie for the Ice Man, who just happened to be the man who wanted his brother dead as well. I guess Cherry was just a complete nutball with no sense of mercy or reasoning. Reggie was a tough guy, but i still couldn't figure out why he wanted to get away from Jack. If it was because of the money, i'd say screw it, a dangerous prick has put a contract on my head! If i knew a powerful dude like the Ice Man wanted me dead, there would be no way i'd be able to live a normal life without worrying he would find me wherever i was. I'm not tough or brave, nor do i know how to use a gun, but if someone wanted me or those i loved dead, i would find him and kill him first if i could.

The Iceman killed one of their own members during the course of the movie. It seems these bikers have a strong honour rule (unexpected for a bunch of low life thugs) whereby if one of their own is killed, they take revenge.

SPOILER ALERT!!!

Yes! That biker dude William Price was murdered by The Ice Man. He was friends with Ganz and the other biker. Remember the first scene of the movie, at the bar, where they blow away those two sheriff's deputies? They all were there. Price shot the bartender when he was about to call police.

Yes, Roger Ebert even mentioned that in his review. Someone told me years ago (not on here, of course) that maybe it was a cover up so he wouldn't get caught. Personally, I thought it was dumb for Kehoe to be the Iceman since in the first movie he seemed pretty good.

reply

Yeah, it was just a case of the writer saying, "What can we do to SHOCK the audience?"

I have a new philosophy. I'm only going to dread one day at a time.

reply

I didn't have a problem with it. If anything, he probably used the police force to take care of some business that normally he would have hired help on. He doesn't have to spend the money on any goon squad or anything. Just get the police to do it for you. Besides, who knows who else was under the Iceman's payroll ? Nowadays, it's not that common to be hearing about dirty cops but at the time, I don't think people bought into it that much.

reply

The "dirty" cop excuse flies...Its kind of like that saying..."Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer". Thats just what Kehoe was doing. Being a cop was the perfect cover for his underground organization as he would be able to keep tabs on the investigation of him from the inside. Thats why he always seemed one step ahead of Nolte throughout the whole movie up to the end.

reply

This clearly has to be one of the most pointless movie plot twists ever, but I still like the movie. We see the guy up to the middle and then don't see him until the VERY end and we sit there like "WTF? Suddenly Cates's friend is the Ice Man?" It's the most throw-away plot twist I've seen to date.

Well, according to an interview done years ago before his passing, Brion James [The Iceman] said a lot of his stuff got cut out of the final film, about 20 minutes worth of missing footage. He wasn't too happy about it & said that he looked like "a dressed extra". If Paramount ever decides to re-release this film the way it was intended, maybe it can show that there certain points that didn't make it that obvious.

reply

Oh. That explains why him being the villain is so sudden and out-of-nowhere. Hopefully we'll get to see that cut footage soon. To be honest I think with the cut we have, it would've made more sense if Ed O'Ross or Mr. Tillman from Road House were the Iceman.

for the pension? i've seen & heard people act crazy & spout crazy logic & romantic notions for a pension or retirement plan from an employer as if automatically it's a 'great thing' & safe & the ideal way to think about the future. most of the time they act even more crazy & illogical for said type of pension than even how they think about being financially vulnerable to a spouse or romantic or business partner with their investments.

Keough was in the first movie. Oddly they never make any mention though. Could he have found out AFTER they killed Ganz in the first who a Reggie was?

reply

he was? i forgot about that.

We're not soldiers and he's not the enemy. He's a pizza man.

reply

Yeah, Kehoe was in the first film. Watch for him in the station scene. He even says, "Hey, Dick *beep* Tracy!" when Jack shows him that the picture of Wong on the board after being shot on the park bench is the same guy in Ganz's gang files.

It's such a dumb idea. Millionaire drugs kingpin is a regular detective. A) It doesn't say much for the other detectives he works with if they don't see him doing what he needs to do to take care of his business. B) A detective works all hours of the day and night, as does a crime kingpin time for both? C) A kingpin, by definition, has to have a huge network of subordinates - would no one, upon being busted, have ever snitched on him before in exchange for credit? D) If IA are sniffing around the office, does no one notice this guy has milloins of dollars? Etc, Etc, But hey, If Im gonna pick holes, I guess I should go on about the everlasting six shooters, the ex-con who can get away with shooting the public, the cops who shoot several people and have no paperwork.....
