spot on, exactly that was my initial reaction when comparing the two movies years ago, that development didn't sit right with me, the way i rationalised it was murphy was a major star by the time this sequel was made 1990 but a newcomer in 1982 with the first 48 hrs actually being his breakthrough if not even debut, also this comes off as much cleaner and uptight than the first, there was a sort of loose language and a rough style about the first, this feels like from another time even though it's just a few years later, afraid to offend anyone, kind of takes away the charm of the first, not to mention it is much more violent and uncomfortable, i actually skip the first part of the movie because it's so brutal, also the different experimental camera angles makes it feel of a whole different time than the first as well, and the villains comes off as dorky tough guys of the time, both leading roles seem to get some pretty raw deals in this, but it has great suspension and nolte and murphy makes great fun interacting with each other, it looks so funny when nolte pops his head in when murphy talks to a guy behind the glass in prison and grabs the phone at one point, and the great theme song returns, i actually tried to get a hold of that song for years, the end with the ambulance reminds me of the similar ending in twilight zone the movie, this is yet another action comedy eddie murphy movie taking place in a strip joint, i watched one of those eddie murphy scenes at grandma and she walked in during the strip club and said "so this is what you're watching when i'm away", i was way too young to even know what a strip joint was. i wish there'd been more 48hrs movies like beverly hills cop 1 2 3.

from a lost strange home i leave,
to your place of grace and hospitality,
its as good as life gets on this earth,
arriving wounded salvation by love,
in your kitchen my spirit fill up,
and i dont have to starve to death,
as i return home as a stranger again.
