How Did Jack Figure Out Who The Ice Man Was?

(SPOILERS) I know he is in the station and the guy tells him that they got a match on the Ice Man's dead partner and Jack says "I ran this last night and I got nothing" and the clerk says "Thats funny, Cruz busted him last July" which makes Jack follow Cruz out of the station and to the club.

The part I don't understand is when Reggi tells the bikers Cruz isnt the Iceman Jack steps out and says "You got the wrong guy, don't they Cruz?" and then Kehoe (Iceman) steps out and Jack says "You know Ben, I really didn't want to believe it."

How did Jack figure out it was Kehoe? Why wouldnt he think it was Cruz?

My guess is that the scenes you feel should be there to explain the deduction, aren't there because of the radical studio editing the film suffered just prior to its original release. 50 minutes ended up on the editing room floor, including most of third lead Brion James's (Ben Kehoe) performance. That's gotta cause some major continuity issues.🐭

6. Ben Kehoe - Another 48 Hrs.

48 Hrs. was the movie that propelled Eddie Murphy into the limelight, and it says a lot about his position that he went from his screen debut in the original to being top billed and highest paid for the sequel eight years later.

Another actor whose role changes a lot between movies is the late, great character actor Brion James, a fellow cop to Nick Nolte’s gruff detective. He doesn’t have a lot to do in the original except tease Nolte, but his role in the sequel was greatly expanded; in a twist that becomes more baffling the longer you think about it, it’s revealed he’s the mysterious drug lord The Iceman, who is responsible for the events of both movies.

It must be sheer luck Eddie Murphy’s character didn’t spot him during the original movie. Either that or it's a twist for the sake of it, and the product of a screenwriter trying desperately to tie the movies together, logic be damned.

He did think it was Cruz until Reggie said it wasn't him. He basically makes a hunch it's Kehoe which Kehoe confirms when he says: "Sorry to let you down Jack". (His appearance at the club was obviously more than a coincidence for Nolte not to notice)

But that's not how it plays out.

Reggie: You got the wrong guy you guys being set up.

Jack: You got the wrong guy... Don't they Cruz

Cruz: Hi Jack

Biker: Its Christmas here Willy, we ice them all. Hammond the pig the whole ball of wax.

Reggie: THAT'S HIM! That's the Iceman Right there!

Kehoe: Hi Jack

Jack: You know Ben I really didn't want to believe it.

Kehoe: Sorry to let you down Jack.

Nothing that I can see should give Jack the impression that it isn't Kehoe. There just isn't anything that would suggest it wasnt Cruz.

The way I saw this wasn't really a plot hole - it was just that Jack was probably eavesdropping on the conversation so when Cruz showed up perhaps he put it together. Or... think about this, sure - Jack tailed Cruz to that club but maybe he spotted Kehoe and then moved in.

Yes, I'm probably overthinking it but I don't see this as a plot hole.
